Principle Investigator

Richard E. Hartman, PhD

I graduated from Missouri State University in 1993 with a BS in experimental psychology. I then enrolled in the Behavior, Brain & Cognition program at Washington University in St. Louis, where I studied rodent behavior and neurodegeneration under behavioral expert Dave Wozniak in John Olney’s (the “father of excitotoxicity”) lab. During this time, I helped Dave set up Washington University’s Animal Behavior Core facility for testing transgenic mice, which were a new technology at the time. I defended my PhD dissertation (on the long-term cognitive effects of ischemic stroke in rats) on September 11, 2001 (yes, that Sep. 11), then did a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship in the lab of Alzheimer’s disease guru Dave Holtzman. While in the Holtzman lab, I worked with a number of transgenic and knockout mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and learned biochemical/histological techniques for assessing biomarkers of neuropathology.

I am currently a tenured professor of experimental psychology and neuroscience, and I direct the Behavioral Neuroscience Lab at Loma Linda University, an R2 health-sciences institute in southern California. Our team has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers (which have been cited over 8000 times) on various topics, but mostly centered around phenotyping models of neurodegeneration and using phytochemicals and/or other treatment strategies to prevent neurodegeneration. Our work has been funded by several agencies, including NASA, DOD, NIDA, NINDS, NICHD, NRSA, California Table Grape Commission, and LLU. I also teach the graduate-level classes Psychobiological Foundations, Psychopharmacology, Cognitive Foundations, Advanced Research Methods, as well as lecture for LLU’s Foundations of Neuroscience, Cortical Circuits, and Structural & Functional Neuroscience for Graduate Students classes. With regard to service, I have sat on a number of organizing committees for regional, national, and international professional conferences. I have also provided peer-reviews to a number of scientific journals and granting agencies. I currently serve on LLU’s University Faculty Council and Rank & Tenure Committee, and I have previously served on IRB committees at LLU and Cal State San Bernardino. I have also been chair of several PhD dissertations, PsyD doctoral projects, and master’s theses.

Finally, in my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my family, hiking/camping, playing guitar, seeing live music, playing go and chess, and practicing jiu jitsu and judo.
